Ontario announces new supports for apprentices - Oct 09
October 24, 2009
Ontario’s premier, Dalton McGuinty, recently announced new measures to help workers enter and complete apprenticeships.
“More Ontarians than ever are entering the skilled trades to support
their families and we’re committed to helping them succeed,” said
McGuinty. “These additional measures will help Ontario’s apprentices
train to fill high skill, high quality jobs in the future.”
New supports and incentives include grants of up to $2000 to apprentices and $1000 to employers when training is successfully completed. Also, giving apprentices the choice to complete more of their in-school training upfront when work placements are temporarily unavailable. Grants of up to $1500 per term are also in the mix to help apprentices with the cost of school when they are not eligible for employment insurance.
“Ontario understands the importance of apprenticeship to our long-term prosperity. Supporting apprentices, employers and training providers is an investment in Ontario’s future,” said John Milloy, minister of training, colleges and universities.
