June 25, 2012 - AltaLink is a fully independent transmission company, responsible for the maintenance and operation of approximately 11,600 kilometres of transmission lines and 260 substations in Alberta. AltaLink is seeking to hire a:

Principal Engineer, Substations - Full-time, permanent
This position is located in Calgary, Alta.

Summary:
An opening currently exists for a Principal Engineer of Substations within the Strategic Engineering Team in the Asset Management Department. The role of Principal Engineer, Substations will appeal to individuals who enjoy leading a dynamic team, who are flexible in their approach to work, and who are self-starters.

The Principal Engineer, Substations will be a progressive individual who has extensive technical expertise in substation equipment and design, both from a vendor and owner perspective. The successful candidate will lead a group of technical experts comprised of engineers and technologists responsible for managing AltaLinks substation assets. This individual must be comfortable setting standards, developing innovative solutions, mentoring junior staff and challenging the status quo.

The Principal Engineer, Substations interacts with a variety of business units and may be involved in project assignments. Time-management, organizational and interpersonal skills are critical for success in the role.

Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Manager, Strategic Engineering, and the technical direction of the Chief Engineer, this individual will work closely with the Principal of Major Equipment and be accountable for all or in part for the following:
• Proven technical capability associated but not limited to the following specification, design, configuration, manufacture, installation and commissioning the following substation systems. Station Design and philosophy, Connectors, Insulators, Buswork Design, Fencing, Indication metering, Station Auxiliaries, AC, DC Station Service, Batteries and Charger, Backup Generator, Grounding/Gravel Design and Testing, Lightning Protection, Insulation Coordination, Foundation Design, Structural Design, Control Buildings, Cables and Raceways, Contamination Control/Monitoring, Wildlife mitigation, Audible Noise.
• An understanding of the Alberta Transmission Grid technical policy, its suite of technical specifications and supporting documentation would be an advantage.
• Working with internal and external parties, eg. equipment suppliers, manufacturers, service providers, professional bodies, and working within a strong team-working culture.
• Communicating complex technical or commercial issues to peers or senior managers.
• Work in and lead cross functional teams.
• Provide technical support, direction and training to AltaLink Field personnel.
• Develop, design, check, and approve Substation Standards including the preparation of application drawings, guidelines, testing plans as well as training of design and field staff in the application of these standards.
• Carry out market research, prepare technical specifications and requests for quotation, perform evaluation testing and make recommendations for new Substation equipment.
• Provide technical input and review project scope documents, preliminary and final designs and commissioning test results for maintenance driven capital projects associated with Substations.
• Provide support in the management of equipment databases, analysis programs, system models and testing plans.
• Provide technical support, training and mentoring to other AltaLink departments and contractors for issues related to Substations applications.
• Take a leadership role in resolving complex technical issues pertaining to substation facilities and equipment.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 10 years experience in utility substations, installation, testing, maintenance and operations.
• Registered or eligible to register as a Professional Engineer or Technologist with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGGA).
• Experience in developing standards, functional specifications, and preparation of test procedures.
• Technical knowledge and understanding of electric transmission system operation, maintenance, performance, power equipment and substation design.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
• Demonstrated ability to positively influence others, and develop strong internal and external working relationships.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with experience writing clear and concise documentation.
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to simultaneously manage a wide variety of issues.
• Demonstrated leadership ability.
