Project Engineer

An opportunity currently exists for an Electrical Engineer within AltaLink’s Project Engineering team. The successful candidate will work with internal and external technical staff to ensure that new substation, telecommunication and transmission line facilities are appropriately integrated into AltaLink’s high voltage transmission system. As such, this individual will provide technical leadership at all critical project phases -- from planning through to implementation and final acceptance.

This position will appeal to individuals with a utility background who are looking for an opportunity to develop their engineering and leadership talents in a dynamic utility environment.

Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Manager, Project Engineering this individual will be accountable for all or in part of the following:
• Develop project scoping documents that provide sufficient detail to allow accurate estimating and clear direction to an EPCM contractor.
• Provide technical direction and answer EPCM contractors’ questions to ensure each project meets acceptable standards for operability, functionality, maintainability, reliability, durability and safety.
• Maintain timely and effective communication with the appropriate internal and external personnel in support of each of these processes.
• Proven track record of producing innovative, productivity enhancing and forward thinking solutions.
• Maintain effective working relationships with suppliers, partners and internal clients that result in growing understanding, good decisions and effective cooperation.
• Liaise with internal departments and customers to resolve technical and project issues.
• Direct and coordinate engineering activities for the project.
• As the point of EPCM contact on engineering aspects of assigned projects, maintain regular contact for progress of work, exchange of information, advice.
• Coordinate engineering effort with Project Manager.

Qualifications
Minimum qualifications for this position are as follows:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Qualifies for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA).
• Technical knowledge and understanding of electric transmission system operation, maintenance, performance, power equipment and substation design.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal and written (reporting, graphical) communication skills with ability to work in a team environment, positively influence others, and develop strong internal and external relationships.
• Able to take a leadership role for resolving technical issues.
• Able to work both independently and as a member of a team, providing technical advice and guidance to others.
• Demonstrated strong analytical, risk assessment and problem solving skills.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage a wide variety of issues on multiple projects simultaneously.
• Comfortable working in a dynamic changing environment with multiple, occasionally conflicting, priorities.

Preference will be given to individuals who possess Transmission utility technical experience.
