Summary
The Senior Conceptual Engineer is a member of the Conceptual Engineering team within the Projects department and will report to the Manager, Conceptual Engineering. The primary purpose of this position is to lead a System Studies team that performs system studies to support Customer Interconnection and Regional Planning.
The Senior Conceptual Engineer will directly support the rest of the Conceptual Engineering team as they develop concepts for new customer interconnections to AltaLink’s transmission system. In addition, the Senior Conceptual Engineer will guide a team to perform a variety of system studies to support the AESO’s development of regional transmission reinforcement plans. The Senior Conceptual Engineer will work with a multi-disciplinary team, both internal and external to resolve any issues that arise during the all project stages that require system studies. Mentoring of junior team members is a key role.
Responsibilities
• Perform system studies for Interconnection Proposals (IPs), or system upgrade projects. Studies will include powerflow, short circuit, motor start and transient stability analysis.
• Support Conceptual Engineers in development of technical specifications for various transmission options for interconnection projects.
• Collaborate with Strategic Engineering and AESO on Planning Base Case Model Management to assure that system models for future years will be accurate and available on time.
• Work with the AESO and customers in resolving any technical and engineering issues that arise during the concept stage.
• Provide advice and input to the AESO's lead regional and bulk system planning studies.
• Provide direction to the AESO to identify system and operational issues on AltaLink’s transmission system.
• Perform system impact studies and design Remedial Action Scheme (RAS) when necessary.
• Manage multiple projects during the concept phase.
• Work with and mentor junior members of the Conceptual Engineering team.
Qualifications
• Ten years of power system engineering experience on high voltage transmission systems (138 kV, 240 kV, 500 kV) including minimum 5 years of industrial experience with utility companies.
• B.Sc. or higher degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Professional Engineer registered with APEGGA.
• Demonstrated leadership capability in leading a multi-disciplinary team.
• Documented experience with PTI’s (Power Technology Incorporated) PSSE program and other power system analysis tools such as PSCAD/EMTDC.
• Fluent in Microsoft Office: Word, Power Point, Excel, etc.
• Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
