Power Quality and Electrical Effects Engineer (term)

Summary
An opportunity currently exists for the position of an Electrical Engineer in the Power Quality & Electrical Effects team, in the Safety and Services department. This is a 2-year term position and will be located in Calgary.

This role requires an experienced and confident Engineer who, under the leadership and direction of AltaLink’s Power Quality & Electrical Effects Lead, is accountable to assess the operation of AltaLink’s transmission facilities to ensure that applicable standards and guidelines are adhered to in the area of Power Quality and Electrical Effects. For problems caused by AltaLink’s facilities, appropriate mitigation must be put in place to resolve the issue. This includes the identification of concerns, test against applicable standards and guidelines, analysis of options, plus development and implementation of appropriate solutions. Utilization of external consultants is sometimes required.

Responsibilities
• Provide technical leadership in the management of issues at AltaLink related to Power Quality (harmonics, voltage imbalance) and Electrical Effects (electric and magnetic fields (EMF), Interference (television, radio, GPS), Induction (pipeline, telephone, fence, building), Stray/Tingle Voltage and Audible Noise).
• Support the development, modification or interpretation of standards and practices affecting the quality of electric service to customers.
• Provide support for issues related to Grounding (Equipotential Bonding and Grounding (EB&G), Temporary Protective Grounds (TPG) plus substation Ground Potential Rise (GPR) and Step/Touch Potential).
• Utilize analysis programs and tools used by AltaLink related to Power Quality (Ion Enterprise) and Electrical Effects (CAFÉ, CDEGS) assessments.

Qualifications
• Must have a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, with a minimum of 3 years experience in the power system industry.
• Must be eligible to become registered with APEGGA .
• Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Must have demonstrated ability to make sound judgments with respect to the appropriate behaviour in given situations.
• Must have strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships, and must be a strong team player.
• Must have strong analytical and problem solving skills and be able to manage multiple competing priorities.
• Must have strong reporting and graphical presentation skills.
• Demonstrated experience in managing issues related to Power Quality, Electrical Effects and/or Grounding is preferred.
• Knowledge of applicable standards such as CSA, IEC and IEEE standards would be an asset.
• Formal training in the area of Power Quality, Electrical Effects or Grounding is preferred.
• Familiarity with Power Quality and/or Disturbance analyzers and software would be an asset.
