November 05, 2009
Cathy McLeod, member of parliament for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo—on behalf of Diane Finley, federal minister of human resources and skills development—announced federal support for the 2010 Cariboo Regional Skills Competition and Thompson Rivers University Techno Expo.
A.R. Green Enterprises Ltd. will receive $15,513 through the Government
of Canada’s Youth Awareness program to organize and promote the two
events, which will help make careers in the skilled trades and
technology sectors more visible and accessible for youth.
“These two events will give local youth the opportunity to participate in competitions that showcase their technical and leadership skills, and also raise their awareness of the fields of trades and technology,” said Alan Green, president of A.R. Green Enterprises Ltd. “The funding and support from the Government of Canada, Skills Canada, Thompson Rivers University, local unions and trades associations will go a long way in ensuring a great experience for all the participants.”
A.R. Green Enterprises Ltd. has been providing instruction, curriculum development and consultation services in the area of technical trades since 1978. Between October 28, 2009, and March 31, 2010, the organization will partner with employers, educators and labour groups to coordinate and promote the Cariboo Regional Skills Competition and the Techno Expo with the aim of repositioning trade and technical careers as a first-choice career option with youth. It is expected that 150 youth will participate in the competition, while another 250 will attend the expo.
The annual Cariboo Regional Skills Competition is held at Thompson Rivers University’s School of Trades and Technology and gives youth the opportunity to participate in competitions. Competitions range from automotive service and carpentry, to Web design and hair dressing.
The Techno Expo is a partnership between Thompson Rivers University and local businesses and industries. Its objective is to show the community the new trends in trades and technology to help youth make informed career choices.
