Homeowners using electronics to reduce home energy costs
Homeowners are factoring energy efficiency into purchase decisions of consumer electronics in an effort to reduce home energy costs, according to a new study from the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). The study, “Home Technologies and Energy Efficiency: A Look At Behaviours, Issues and Solutions”, finds increasing consumer interest in the energy efficiency benefits of consumer electronics products, including do-it-yourself solutions and professionally installed home technologies.

Ontario tax harmonization's impact on IT
After 18 years of maintaining a retail sales tax alongside the federal GST, Ontario is making a bold move to modernize sales taxes in the province. In his budget, Finance Minister Dwight Duncan announced that Ontario will be “harmonizing” its sales tax system with the GST, effective July 1, 2010. Instead of a 5% federal GST and 8% Ontario Retail Sales Tax (RST), there will be a single 13% Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) in Ontario. This system has been in operation in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick since 1997.

Nortel embarks on next phase of collaboration with IBM
Nortel is teaming with IBM to integrate the Nortel Agile Communication Environment (ACE) with IBM Lotus Sametime Unified Telephony (SUT) to offer enterprise customers advanced communications-enabled business applications. The two companies have been collaborating on strategic initiatives such as unified communications (UC), carrier-hosted, and small-to-midsize business solutions since 2005.

ZigBee incorporating Internet Engineering Task Force standards
The ZigBee Alliance will incorporate global IT standards from the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) into its specification portfolio of low-power wireless networking standards. This move will expand the portfolio of ZigBee specs, says the alliance, and advance the growth of Smart Grid applications that have adopted the ZigBee Smart Energy public application profile.

BICSI and CSI sign honorary friendship agreement
Information transport systems (ITS) association BICSI signed an “honorary friendship agreement” with Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) to promote further growth and development of the ITS and telecom industries, it says. The official agreement was signed in March by BICSI president Edward J. Donelan and CSI president Gilman K. M. Hu.
