b_200_0_16777215_0___images_stories_WebNews2010_east_penn_unigy_hr3500et_hr7500et_batterieslr.jpgEast Penn Mfg. expanded its front-access battery line with the Unigy HR3500ET and HR7500ET, both with a 10-year design life for UPS service. The company says the front-access terminal configuration provides both a space-saving and safer design for high-powered systems. By reducing the additional clearance needed for top connections and longer cable lengths, East Penn says UPS installations employing this battery design can maximize efficiency and long-term savings while achieving more power in less space. Unigy High Rate batteries feature IPF technology, which promises to optimize power capacities and ensure consistent cell-to-cell voltages. These batteries also use AGM (absorbed glass mat) technology to lower internal resistance for better high-rate, short-term discharges. Recessed posts with epoxy post seals act as a secure barrier to keep in acid and critical pressure. Low-pressure, self-sealing valves prevent premature dry-out and minimize gassing. All batteries are built with flame-retardant materials and flame arrestors.

b_200_0_16777215_0___images_stories_WebNews2010_solahd_s4k2uc_ups.jpgSolaHD’s S4KC uninterruptible power system (UPS) incorporates online, double conversion features in a compact package that is engineered for industrial applications, such as industrial computers, automation systems, robotics and process controls. It is available in 120/208/240V or 230V models from 6000VA to 10000VA. The S4KC delivers continuous power to connected equipment with no break or transferring to battery. Its rated output power factor of 0.8-0.9 is a better match with switch mode power supplies, says the company, which allows for more efficient UPS utilization. The S4KC can be mounted directly into a standard 19-in. rack, taking 4U for the 6kVA and 6U for the 10kVA. It can also be floor-mounted for standalone applications.

Eaton Corp. announced the Eaton 9395 uninterruptible power system (UPS) is “the first power quality product to receive a Sustainable Materials Rating Technology (SMaRT) Gold certification,” says Eaton. SMaRT is developed/administered by the non-profit Institute of Market Transformation to Sustainability (MTS) and awards products that offer multiple environmental and economic benefits and meet life cycle environmental performance requirements. This certification allows Eaton to contribute points in two Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credit categories. The 9395 can also contribute towards the Energy and Atmosphere Credit.

“The 9395 SMaRT certification resulted largely from Eaton’s commissioned life cycle assessment that compared everything from the materials used in manufacturing, to energy used during construction, to costs associated with transporting the product,” says the Eaton. “The study results showed that improvements in UPS efficiency play a significant role in reducing the overall environmental impact of the product.”

AFL launches RFoG WDM module

July 20, 2010

b_200_0_16777215_0___images_stories_WebNews2010_afl_rfog_wdm_module2.jpgAFL Telecommunications introduced its newest WDM module supporting the latest platforms in PON technology. The RFoG supports wavelength management requirements of 1310, 1490, 1550, 1590/1610nm wavelengths. Designed in a traditional LGX module, virtually all connector types are an option, says AFL, including high-density platforms delivering up to three discrete devices in a single-width module. The RFoG WDM module’s features include flexible packaging options, low excess and PDL (polarization dependent loss) monitoring/tap ports. Applications include FTTx and access networks, and CATV links.

Chatsworth Products, Inc. (CPI) has released an N-Series TeraFrame Network Cabinet engineered for the Cisco Nexus 7018 Switch. It was designed and tested, according to CPI, “to deploy the Cisco Nexus 7000 Series 18-slot switch in a hot aisle/cold aisle layout”. It also supports a mix of patch panels and fiber enclosures above the switch. To work for the 7018 switch, the TeraFrame provides a wide-framed cabinet solution that allows thermal and cable management, and physical support. The cabinet is constructed with an integrated network switch exhaust duct that converts the side-to-side airflow pattern into a front-to-rear pattern. Alongside this, the cabinet includes offset removable doors and side panels to allow better airflow and easier access to equipment and cabling. Finally these doors are perforated to, again, promote airflow and space. The TeraFrame also features other support solutions such as plastic T-shaped cable management fingers with openings to align rackmount units and organize cables. Also, full-length brush-sealed openings on the top panel allow cables to enter and exit the management space. The cabinet also allows for support through two pairs of 19-in. EIA mounting rails, and 42U or 45U of vertical mounting space. The TeraFrame is available in two heights and three depths to match site requirements.

b_600_400_0_0___images_stories_WebNews2010_chloride_mod10_online_3phase_ups_system.jpgChloride North America launched its MOD10 Series―an online three-phase UPS system featuring a modular, vertically scalable rack-mounted design. The MOD10 provides adaptable backup power that promises to lower total cost of system ownership, reduce required floor space and help sustain vital network uptime. Users add only as many 10 kVA 2U-sized modules to their MOD10 system as required (up to 50 kVA or 100 kVA). Installation of the hot-swappable modules can be performed without system shutdown, and does not require senior technical personnel. It can be deployed as a primary source for small to medium data centres or as an end-of-row redundant source in larger installations. Redundant modules and battery packs coupled with a static switch system enable the MOD10 to deliver 99.999% availability.
