BC Hydro and COPE Local 378 ratify agreement

July 28, 2014 - BC Hydro and the Canadian Office & Professional Employees Union (COPE) Local 378 have ratified a five-year agreement involving about 1750 administrative, financial and technical employees involved in planning, operating and maintaining the province’s power transmission and generation system.

Hyde Park contractor exposes workers to possible electrocution

July 28, 2014 - Employees of P. Gioioso & Sons Inc. (Boston, Mass.) were exposed to possible electrocution from working close to energized powerlines at a Cambridge worksite where required safeguards were not used. The Hyde Park contractor now faces $70,290 US in proposed fines.

July 30, 2014 - A “tri-generation” system fuelled entirely by raw plant oils could have great potential for isolated homes and businesses operating outside grid systems say the people behind a small-scale combined cooling, heat and power system, which has been designed to provide “dependable electricity” without requiring grid connectivity.

SaskPower reports 7th smart meter failure; suspends installations

July 29, 2014 - SaskPower says it continues to suspend meter installations across the province and has stepped up investigation efforts after a seventh meter failure on July 26 in Saskatoon. There were no injuries or property damage; all damage was contained to the meter and the area immediately around it.


Electrician seats for LNG industry opening at BCIT

July 28, 2014 - The Government of British Columbia says it is delivering on its commitment in B.C.’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint to increase access and reduce waitlists for critical trades training seats by adding 272 seats at the BC Institute of Technology (BCIT) that are aligned with the top 12 Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) trades jobs, including industrial electricians.
