March 15, 2013 - Extron Electronics has added the DMS 2000 and DMS 3200 frames and DMS fiber matrix boards to the DMS series of modular DVI matrix switchers. According to Extron, the DMS series combine the simplicity and reliability of a fixed I/O matrix switcher with the convenience and flexibility of a modular solution. The DMS 2000 is available in I/O configurations of 4x4 up to 20x20 in a 3U enclosure, and the DMS 3200 is available in I/O configurations of 4x4 up to 32x32 in a 5U enclosure. Available in 4x4 I/O, 4-input, and 4-output configurations, the fiber optic boards can be mixed-and-matched with available DMS DVI matrix boards.
March 15, 2013 - AFL and Dura-Line have joined together to develop an air-blown fiber optic cabling system—eABF (Enterprise Air-Blown Fiber)—which has several key elements that, when combined, yield a state-of-the-art and highly flexible future-proof communications pathway, they say. The system boasts a low-friction high-drag jacketing system that enables the cable to move along the duct at a faster rate of speed. According to the companies, by eliminating the initial high cost typically associated with traditional air-blown fiber systems, network designers will realize that the eABF solution can be their primary network pathway infrastructure. Ideal for data centres, private networks, high-rise buildings, urban and medical campuses, the eABF solution is NEC 770 compliant for both raceways and ducts, and comes complete with AFL connectivity, closures, enclosures, patch cords and connectors, fusion splicers and test equipment.
February 7, 2013 - Mohawk, a manufacturer of copper cable and fiber optic products, formally relaunched its preterminated fiber optic assemblies, including MTP, LC and SC terminated products, with some constructions featuring a 48-hour order-to-ship service. The constructions that qualify for the quick shipping include assemblies made with 12- and 24-fiber OS2 and 12-, 24- and 48-fiber OM3 cable. Receive your order confirmation before noon and your order will ship within two business days. Mohawk says all assembly work exceeds the TIA standard for insertion loss, with a guaranteed performance of <0.35 dB.

AFL acquires Optimal Cable Services

February 4, 2013 - AFL announces it has acquired Optimal Cable Services, a manufacturer of fiber optic cable and provider of connectivity products based in Melbourne, Australia. Optimal will join the AFL portfolio, expanding the company’s global offering of solutions to the telecommunications, mining and general distribution markets.
December 11, 2012 - Fujitsu Ltd., Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp. (NTT) and NEC Corp. (NEC) commenced joint R&D toward making the world’s top-level, 400Gbps/channel-class digital coherent optical transmissions technology.
September 13, 2012 - Early adopters of gigabit fiber optic service are online for three times the daily average of internet users and tend to have relatively complex home networks supporting five or more devices, according to a study released by the Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Council Americas.
August 15, 2012 - The Light Brigade, AFL's training division, has announced a menu-based staff development DVD, titled Fiber Optic Safety, as a training tool to help enhance fiber optic safety for those working with optical fibers and lasers, or installing and operating fiber optic communication systems. DVD bonus materials include a student quiz with matching instructor version, written in Microsoft Word format which can be customized for specific safety needs. DVD chapters include laser types and classifications; optical fiber handling and safety; safety in confined spaces; and chemicals and right-to-know documentation.

AFL Noyes FlexTester Pro kits

June 28, 2012 - AFL's new Noyes FlexTester Pro kits combine a FlexTester multi-function optical tester with the FOCIS Fiber Optic Connector Inspection System and cleaning supplies in a hard-shell carry case. Each kit includes a user-specified, handheld OFL280 or FLX380 FlexTester single-mode OTDR with integrated Optical Laser Source (OLS), Optical Power Meter (OPM) and Visual Fault Locator (VFL). FOCIS includes the DFS1 Digital Fiberscope, a fiber optic connector video-inspection probe with USB interface, and the DFD1 handheld touch tablet. Since FOCIS includes its own handheld display, OTDR testing and connector inspection tasks can proceed in parallel.
