Dewalt’s DCT419 wall scanner checks for embedded materials

May 7, 2015 | By Renée Francoeur

May 7, 2015 – Dewalt’s new hand-held wall scanner, DCT419, was developed to help locate embedded materials behind walls. The DCT419 can detect wood, ferrous and non-ferrous metal, plastic, and unshielded live electric wiring behind multiple wall surfaces, said Dewalt, including drywall, plywood, concrete, and ceramic tile at a sensing depth of up to 3 in.

“The new hand-held wall scanner was designed based on extensive user feedback that helped us to enhance the graphical user interface and embedded material detection capabilities, compared to the previous DCT418 model,” said Greg Weston, with Dewalt Canada marketing. “An improved detection algorithm senses more commonly embedded materials across construction sites, even such as a nail in a wood stud.”

The scanner is used to scan up to a 9.8-ft wall section in a straight line, either vertically or horizontally.  Multiple sensors inside the tool register material type that is most likely behind the wall surface and the detection results are displayed on a 3.5-inch LCD colour screen.

The scanner kit (includes battery and charger) retails for $499.
