$50-MIL “Reshaping Energy Systems” competition from Emissions Reduction Alberta

April 12, 2023 | By Anthony Capkun

April 12, 2023 – Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) is launching a funding competition to advance technologies that “enable a more resilient, efficient, and reliable energy system”.

The $50-million “Reshaping Energy Systems” call for proposals is exploring energy transport and distribution technology, energy storage, digital solutions for energy management, demonstrating grid-interactive building efficiency technologies, low-emission vehicle infrastructure and fleets.

“The pace of technological innovation in the decarbonization of the electrical distribution system requires continuous study and testing of any new solutions. ERA funding provides an opportunity to put these technologies to the test […]” said Grant Wiens, director, Engineering, Fortis.

N.B. “Reshaping” is not limited to any particular energy carrier (e.g. electricity, natural gas, hydrogen) and, in fact, integration between systems is encouraged.

Successful applicants are eligible for up to $10 million, with a minimum request of $250,000. The maximum ERA contribution to a single project will be no more than 50% of the project’s eligible costs.

ERA says technology solutions can originate from anywhere, but they must be piloted, demonstrated, or deployed in Alberta.

Applications are encouraged from technology developers, commercial and industrial building owners, municipalities, Indigenous communities, associations, small- and medium-sized enterprises, research & development organizations, universities, not-for-profit organizations, and others.

The application deadline is June 15, 2023, 5 pm MT.

The funding competition is made possible through the Government of Alberta’s Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund.

INFORMATIONAL WEBINAR

Join ERA’s CEO Justin Riemer, and CIO Mark Summers, for a 1-hour informational webinar on April 24, 2023 (2 pm to 3 pm MT) to learn more about the Reshaping Energy Systems funding call. The discussion will get into scope and eligibility, the submission process, and timelines for decisions. Participants will also have the chance to ask questions.
