Aegis rings protect motors, generators from shaft voltage (SLR, Pro-MR)

April 29, 2016 | By Renée Francoeur

April 29, 2016 – By diverting VFD-induced (variable frequency drive) shaft voltages to ground, Aegis says its pro series rings protect large AC and DC motors from bearing damage, repairs, unplanned downtime and lost revenue. Available for motor shafts to 30-in. in diameter, the rings are designed for high-current applications such as generators, turbines, and medium-voltage motors.

Embedded in the Aegis FiberLock channel along the inner circumference of the pro series rings, six rows of conductive microfibers surround the motor shaft, Aegis says, “providing millions of discharge points for harmful shaft currents and creating the path of least resistance that effectively diverts these currents away from bearings to ground”.

The product comes in solid and split-ring versions.

The SLR ring is designed with O-ring barriers whereras the Pro-MR ring combines a bearing protection ring with a shaft voltage monitoring ring in a single compact unit.
