May 16, 2011 – AFL is opening a new research and development facility in Lowell, Mass., to support the company’s growth and to expand its product offerings for its Fiber Optic Test and Inspection Equipment Division.

The 14,500-sf facility features optics and electronics laboratory development spaces, as well as customer meeting and training facilities for up to 65 engineers and professionals involved in the development of fiber optic test and inspection equipment.

AFL has plans to expand its Test and Inspection Division professional R&D staff by more than 50% in 2011. AFL will continue to maintain the division’s existing 30,000-sf facility and operations located in Belmont, N.H.

“Locating our new R&D facility in Massachusetts accelerates our expansion plans and enables AFL to quickly recruit key professional talent. The Lowell facility is also near multiple colleges and universities, allowing us to attract new college graduates and partner on development efforts,” said George Rose, general manager of AFL’s Test and Inspection Division.
