As May is National Electrical Safety Month, Leviton is reminding contractors, builders and homeowners about the importance of protecting homes and families from electrical fires.

With the installation of an arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI), Leviton says over half of the 51,000 electrical fires that occur each year can be avoided. Without AFCIs, Leviton says “an electrical fire can easily be sparked by a damaged/pinched cord or by driving a nail or screw into a hidden wire during a home improvement project”.

AFCI receptacles, like Leviton’s SmartlockPro AFCI Outlet, are designed to detect a wide range of arcing electrical faults to help prevent electrical systems from becoming a fire’s ignition source.

Leviton is raising awareness to reduce the number of electrically-related fires, fatalities, injuries and property loss that happen each year. To learn more, visit Leviton’s site or click here to watch an AFCI installation tutorial.
