June 14, 2019 - When an authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) such as myself asks, “What is your area classification or designation?’ what are we really asking? Most people assume we are looking at a section 18 requirement for a hazardous location. There are, however, several sections in which a determination from a third party is required and, in most instances, it must be in writing.
April 12, 2019 - Section 64-112 of the CE Code tells us a utility interactive point of connection for a solar project must meet the requirements of the supply authority and Section 84, based on predetermined safety factors. So, even though most utilities (i.e. supply authorities) are not required to conform to Section 84, the installation must do so, as a minimum.
December 11, 2018 - The 2015 CE Code saw a number of changes to Section 68: Pools, Tubs, Spas. The 2018 CE Code also added a few more changes, but you might just wonder, what is really new with pools from the past few years?
September 27, 2018 — With the rewrite of CE Code Section 10, a number of questions spring to mind. In my opinion, the most important are what is the intent of Rule 10-210 and what is it really saying?
July 27, 2018 — For the first time in the CE Code (2018 ed.), a unit substation is defined as an integrated unit consisting of one or more transformers, disconnecting means, overcorrect devices and other associated equipment, each contained in an enclosure designed and constructed to restrict access to live parts (Rule 26-240).
January 22, 2018 — The number of changes coming to the 2018 CE Code are fairly substantial, and while a number of them involve tweaked wording and/or definitions, there are also a fair number of what I would call “significant” changes.
September 15, 2017 — In addition to a number of changes in 2012, CE Code Section 62 “Fixed electric heating systems” underwent a fairly substantial rewrite in 2015. So what’s changed?
June 28, 2017 - What do circuit loading and demand factors mean, and how are they different? A circuit load is a component or portion of the circuit that consumes power. A demand factor is a time-dependent fractional quantity that will always be less than, or equal to, one. Huh?
February 14, 2017 - Believe it or not, it’s that time of year when firms start looking ahead to the camping season and campground upgrades. Nothing much has changed in recreational vehicle parks over the past CE Code cycle, but a number of changes took place over the past 15 years to make this part of the code clearer.
December 12, 2016 - An interactive power production system operates in conjunction with—and can deliver power to—another power system, such as the utility. While this could involve a standard generator, I will focus on renewable energy systems.
August 10, 2016 - The building code defines a vapour barrier as “the elements installed to control the diffusion of water vapour”. Did you notice it says “control” not “eliminate”?
