Oct. 4, 2018 – Captain Electric, a licensed electrical contractor servicing the eastern Greater Toronto Area (GTA), has won a 2018 Ontario Electrical Safety Award in the consumer and home category from the province’s Electrical Safety Authority (ESA).

ESA held the award presentation (pictured) during its annual meeting in Mississauga, Ont. Captain Electric was recognized for its dedication to raising community awareness of electrical hazards. The company has shared safety information with consumers through its website, seminars and a series of YouTube videos. It also actively advocates for the use of ground fault interrupters (GFIs) to prevent electrical fires.

This year’s other honourees include:
• Simeon Go, manager of health, safety and wellness for Energy+ in Cambridge, Ont., who provides power-line safety training to licensed electrical contractors, first responders, electrical distribution employees and consumers.
• The municipal facilities division for London, Ont., whose preventative maintenance program supported a rapid response to a Thames River flood earlier this year and ensured safety while staff repaired damaged equipment.
• The Ontario Fire Marshal’s (OFM’s) public fire safety council working group for stovetop fires, which spent 10 years developing a revised standard requiring built-in safety features for new electric coil element stoves, to prevent the coil from heating beyond the flashpoint of cooking oil.

“Safety is not a sprint, but a marathon,” says Scott Saint, ESA’s chief public safety officer. “The leaders we honoured this year have demonstrated prevention can have a significant effect, but requires a sustained effort.”

The awards were established in 2010 to formally recognize contributions of individuals and organizations toward achieving ESA’s vision for safety from electrical harm.
