September 30, 2016 - “Energy storage-enabled applications are poised to disrupt energy markets”, finds a recent white paper from Navigant Research, which examined five major trends and the related market forces expected to shape the global energy storage industry in 2016 and beyond.
September 20, 2016 - A number of energy projects have received support from Canada’s Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development’s investment of over $39.6 million. $5.5 million in new funding for three previously funded Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) projects was also announced recently from the ministry.
September 14, 2016 - “We’re building the blueprint for Canada’s future ‘gas stations for electric vehicles’, as well as providing efficient, clean power solutions for remote communities,” said BCIT president Kathy Kinloch at the official opening of British Columbia Institute of Technology’s Energy OASIS project.
August 29, 2016 - One solution for storing solar energy for periods when the sun doesn’t shine is to convert it into hydrogen through water electrolysis. The idea is to use the electrical current produced by a solar panel to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. But it’s not as easy as it sounds.
July 20, 2016 - In the wake of Alberta’s plan to transition to more renewable energy sources, a consortium of private sector energy companies have joined forces to launch the Alberta Storage Alliance (ASA) to advance energy storage technologies. Members include: BYD, Enercon, ENMAX, General Electric, NRStor, Opus One Solutions, RES, Rocky Mountain Power, S&C Electric, Temporal Power and UniEnergy Technologies.
July 11, 2016 - Utility companies or others planning to install renewable energy systems (e.g. solar and wind farms) have to decide whether to include large-scale energy storage systems that can capture power when it’s available then release it on demand. In fact, it is often said large-scale renewables generation will only work with right-sized energy storage.
April 25, 2016 - Northern Power Systems Corp.’s new ESS (energy storage solution)—which features the FP2000 FlexPhase power conversion system—promises to enable developers and end users to acquire a fully integrated energy storage system “tailored to their needs”.
April 25, 2016 - A new interactive spreadsheet from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) aims to help utility buyers and sellers of energy storage systems “understand and clearly define the total cost of ownership of these technologies”.
