August 6, 2014 - Ontario’s Oshawa PUC (Power and Utilities Corp.) and Panasonic Eco Solutions—together with technology partners, such as Tabuchi Electric Co. of Japan—kicked off a solar PV and energy management pilot project involving the engineering and commissioning of about 30 residential rooftop solar PV systems that will be combined with energy storage and an energy management system.
July 29, 2014 - A project to store renewable energy is being developed in Nova Scotia and, once developed, could pave the way for electricity generation from wind power to be stored.
July 25, 2014 - Ontario’s grid operator—Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO)—has selected energy storage technologies from five companies that aim to provide “ancillary services to support increased reliability and efficiency of the grid”: Canadian Solar Solutions Inc., Convergent Energy and Power LLC, Dimplex North America Ltd., Hecate Energy and Hydrogenics Corp.
June 25, 2014 - Scientists at University of Southern California (USC) say they have developed a water-based organic battery that is long-lasting and built from cheap, eco-friendly components. Using no metals or toxic materials, the battery is intended for use in power plants, where it may serve as a large-scale means to store energy.
June 17, 2014 - Mitsubishi Electric has introduced the 1 MW (1.05 MVA) 9900C uninterruptible power supply (UPS), calling it the first true on-line double conversion UPS at this power level to feature the highest efficiency at all load levels.
June 16, 2014 - Eaton has launched its Energy Saver System (ESS) Plus technology, which it says features a new Harmonic Reduction System engineered to detect and automatically correct harmonic currents before they affect valuable data centre hardware.
May 7, 2014 - Areva says it has begun operations of its full-scale molten salt energy storage demonstration plant, which is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) and being carried out at Sandia National Laboratories’ National Solar Thermal Test Facility in Albuquerque, N.M.
April 17, 2014 - Hydro-Quebec and Sony Corp. are establishing a joint venture to research and develop a large-scale energy storage system for power grids. They plan to establish the unnamed new company in June 2014.
March 25, 2014 - The new Schneider Electric Galaxy VM three-phase uninterruptible power supply (UPS) claims to reduce energy costs through its 99% efficiency ECOnversion mode, which comes with input harmonic correction and combines double conversion on-line and advanced ECO mode technologies.
February 13, 2014 - Mitsubishi Electric has announced its 9950A uninterruptible power supply (UPS) for mission-critical operations and 400V power distribution infrastructures.
December 3, 2013 - Hitachi Ltd. says it has developed an all-in one, container-type energy storage system as a core energy product for ensuring the stable use of distributed renewable energy (e.g. wind, solar) while maintaining the power supply-demand balance.
November 19, 2013 - Eaton has released its 5SC uninterruptible power system (UPS) for small business servers, storage and network equipment, which features an LCD interface to provide a status of key UPS parameters, such as input and output voltage, load and battery level and estimated runtime.
