November 7, 2016 – Underwriters Laboratories reports it has certified its first Subject 9540 residential energy storage application in the States, and EBMag has learned the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) is in the process of approving UL 9540 as a National Standard of Canada (NSC).

“Enphase is excited that our AC Battery product is the first residential energy storage product to receive a UL 9540 certification for the North American market”, said John Berdner, VP of regulatory and policy strategy at Enphase Energy, based in the United States.

UL Subject 9540 is the new UL safety standard for energy storage systems, covering electrical, electro-chemical, mechanical and other types of storage technologies, for systems interacting with a utility grid, as a standalone supply, or in multiple operational modes, etc. Recently, UL issued the first UL 9540 certification for a complete home energy storage system (ESS) to Enphase Energy, a global energy technology company in the United States.

* Note: this system is in the U.S. and, as such, meets National Electric Code (NEC) 2017 requirements.

According to Dagmar Ebaugh, global public relations with UL, the publication of ANSI/CAN/UL 9540 in Canada is expected later in November.

A UL 9540-certified system is an ESS consists of a UL 1973-certified stationary battery pack used in conjunction with a UL 1741-certified inverter. Enphase’s AC Battery consists of a stationary battery pack manufactured by Eliiy Power Co. and a certified inverter manufactured by Enphase.

“Our work with UL has allowed us to quickly migrate our storage technology from Australia to North America, while complying with all applicable North America safety standards,” Berdner added. “We look forward to further collaboration with UL to expand our product offerings both in breadth and to other geographies globally.”
