August 30, 2019 – TCO Development is developing new criteria for information technology (IT) networking equipment, data storage products and servers, so it can expand its ’TCO Certified’ program to help data centres reduce their consumption of electricity.

With the global increase in mobile devices, streaming services and cloud-based software, the number of data centres has grown significantly. While they used only 1% of global electricity in 2010, they may use as much as 13% in 2030. Already, their related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are equal to those of air travel.

To promote more sustainable practices, TCO will add the new criteria to the latest release in its independent, global, third-party sustainability certification program at the end of this year. (The company launches a new ‘generation’ every three years.)

“In December, IT brands can start applying for certification,” says Sören Enholm, TCO’s CEO. “By including data centre products in TCO Certified, we will help drive more sustainable solutions and enable purchasers to make responsible choices.”
