Alberta advisory panel to consult communities on coal transition (Fall 2016)

September 26, 2016 | By Renée Francoeur

September 26, 2016 – The Alberta government has announced a three-member expert panel to meet with community, labour and industry leaders in regions affected by the transition away from coal-fired electricity generation.

This fall the Advisory Panel on Coal Communities will begin discussions with workers most affected by the retirements of coal-fired generation plants and associated mining operations, including those in and around Parkland and Leduc counties, Forestburg and Hanna.

“We want to see a fair transition that responds to the needs of workers as Alberta transitions to cleaner sources of electricity generation,” said Deron Bilous, minister of Economic Development and Trade. “This panel has the experience and expertise to help us work together to find the best ways to support new jobs and training opportunities through this change.”

Participants will include municipalities, community economic development organizations, small businesses, affected workers and First Nations. The panel’s goal is to “gather information about challenges and opportunities, share information and resources about current programs and supports and generate ideas for training and new opportunities.”
