October 1, 2015 – SNC-Lavalin says it has been awarded the owner’s engineer contract by SaskPower for the Island Falls Powerhouse concrete rehabilitation project in Saskatchewan. The total capital cost of the project is $45 million, according to SNC-Lavalin.

SNC-Lavalin stated it will provide the engineering design; the preparation of drawings and technical specifications necessary for the tender and construction of the concrete rehabilitation; repairs to the Island Falls Powerhouse, Main Dam and A-Dam; and construction supervision and contract management support. The work will be divided into eight phases, spanning a 4.5-year period between 2015 and 2019.

The Island Falls Hydro Station is a hydroelectric generating facility consisting of seven units, ranging in capacity from 13.2MW to 18MW, located approximately 15 km from the Village of Sandy Bay, Sask.

“Our experience in rehabilitation projects, particularly those affected by concrete strength and differential movement within existing concrete structures, positions us well to address SaskPower’s objectives for this powerhouse,” said Sandy Taylor, president of SNC-Lavalin’s Power department. “Building a strong relationship with the community will allow us to use more local resources, creating jobs and improving the socioeconomic situation of those living in and around the area.”

SNC-Lavalin said it is committed to providing employment opportunities to members of Aboriginal communities for the Island Falls Powerhouse project, and will continue to work with SaskPower to establish the most suitable framework for Aboriginal subcontractor participation.
