February 4, 2013 – Saying it will kick blind spots to the curb, Brigade Electronics’ new Smarteye 360º camera system gives drivers a bird’s eye-view of their truck from inside the cab. Comprising four cameras placed around the vehicle, Smarteye works by ‘stitching’ each image together to provide a panoramic view from above (More PHOTOS below). Each camera’s angle and 187º lens renders a “realistic, light-balanced video image” displayed in real-time on a high-definition cab monitor. As part of a controlled experiment (SEE VIDEO below), a driver was tasked with reversing a truck with all of its windows blacked-out. With the system installed, extreme caution and a slow, steady pace, the challenge was completed safely.
