Guelph Hydro fires up smart grid-ready Arlen transformer station

September 22, 2012 | By Anthony Capkun

September 21, 2012 – Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc. recently energized the new Arlen transformer station. The 115-kV, expandable transformer station—a first for Guelph Hydro, says the utility—features “sophisticated smart grid functionality and the latest in transformer, switchgear and protection equipment technology”.

“Safety, reliability and the ability to meet an increasing demand for electricity in our growing community are key issues for Guelph Hydro,” said Barry Chuddy, CEO. “The new Arlen Transformer Station will not only increase reliability of the electricity network in Guelph and provide sufficient capacity to accommodate 20 years of growth, it will also enhance our ability to incorporate cleaner, local sources of power into the grid; thus, helping to further the goals of the Guelph Community Energy Initiative.”

The new transformer station was dedicated to the memory of Joseph Arlen, P.Eng., chief engineer and general manager of Guelph Hydro from 1967 to 1987, at an inauguration ceremony attended by municipal officials, electricity industry executives and representatives of local companies who were involved in the construction of the transformer station.
