Hungry to Help Haiti

January 15, 2010
By Anthony Capkun

The Canadian electrical industry has been a leader in helping feed children in Haiti and around the world through the Hungry for Change Campaign (Canadian Feed the Children). One of its community partners is The House of Hope orphanage, which has helped orphaned or abandoned children experience full, healthy childhoods. It is located in Gressier, where earthquake damage was rated 9 out of 10 on the intensity scale.

Despite
the massive earthquake that rocked Haiti just days ago, we have learned
that all 200 children in the orphanage are safe, and the building (one
of a very few) remains standing. Miraculously, many of the children had
left school just moments before various buildings collapsed in the
earthquake.

House of
Hope director Alice Barthole reports the village was “flattened, and
there are many people dead and injured on the streets, with very little
help”.

At this
point, the orphanage has water, power and food, but many people are
coming to the orphanage for help
. The supplies will run out quickly,
repairs will be required and the ongoing needs of the orphanage will be
greater than ever.
