IEEE IAS Electrical Safety, Technical and Mega Projects Workshop 2010

May 1, 2009 | By Anthony Capkun

The IEEE IAS (Industrial Applications Society) Electrical Safety, Technical and Mega Projects (ESTMP) Workshop provides a forum for exchanging and advancing industry knowledge in the areas of electrical safety, engineering design, system reliability and the implementation and execution of mega projects. The next ESTMP workshop is scheduled for March 29-31, 2010, in Calgary, Alta.

The workshop’s focus is to share innovative concepts and successes, as well as lessons learned in the areas of:

1) advancing state-of-the-art knowledge and best practices,
2) stimulating innovation in creating the next generation of technology, and
3) design and implementation of mega projects.

Call for presentations

Consistent with past workshops, presentations play a key role. Key dates for presentation submissions are as follows:

Notice of intent to present: July 30
Abstract of presentation: September 15
Notification of acceptance: October 1
Draft presentation: December 1
Final presentation for printing and CD preparation: February 15, 2010

Panel discussions
In addition to the presentations, three panel discussions are planned as part of the workshop related to the following topics:

1) Temporary and construction power
2) Inherent safety by design (equipment)
3) OBIEC (Objective-Based Industrial Electrical Code): opportunities and pitfalls

This forum will include brief presentations followed by panel
discussions. Individuals or companies who express interest in
participating in these discussions are asked to submit abstracts for a
15- to 20-min presentation related to one of the discussion topics
above. The intent is to provide a cross-section view of the topic to
the audience, which will serve as the basis for further interactive
discussion. (Contact our technical committee chair, Pat Robinson at
pat@altelec.net or 403-216-2150 for more information.)

Tutorial proposal
The workshop committee will consider conducting a tutorial on a subject
consistent with the mission of the ESTMP conference. This tutorial
would be intended to provide workshop attendees with an opportunity to
expand their knowledge on the subjects of Safety, Technical and Mega
Projects. Any individual, group or company that is interested should
contact the technical committee chair, Pat Robinson at pat@altelec.net
or 403-216-2150 for more information.

Sponsorship and exhibition
There are opportunities to sponsor items as breakfasts, coffee breaks,
lunch, presenter gifts, A/V aids, printed material, etc., as well as
participate in the exhibition. For further information, contact the
sponsorship chair, Tim Driscoll at tim.driscoll@shell.com or (403)
560-3211.

Exhibitions are held on Monday and Tuesday afternoons following the
technical sessions. Vendors and suppliers are invited to showcase their
products and services. For more information, contact the exhibition
chair, Ken Martin, at kmartin@brodwell.com or (403) 253-7702 ext. 224.
