Inland Steel fined for workplace fatality

November 21, 2020 | By Anthony Capkun

November 21, 2020 – Earlier this month, Inland Steel Products Inc. pleaded guilty in Saskatoon Provincial Court to one count under The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996, relating to the death of a worker.

The charges resulted from an incident that occurred in October 2018, in the Rural Municipality of Corman Park, Sask. While machinery was being serviced, it came into contact with a powerline, resulting in the death of a worker.

The company pleaded guilty to failing, as an employer, to ensure that a worker is trained in all matters necessary to protect the health and safety of the worker when the worker is moved from one work activity or worksite to another that differs with respect to hazards, facilities or procedures, resulting in the death of a worker.

Inland was subsequently ordered to pay a fine of $90,000 plus a $36,000 surcharge, for a total of $126,000.
