Inrush current limiter protects LEDs and power supplies

November 21, 2018 | By Peter Saunders

November 21, 2018 – Siemens is supplementing its logic module portfolio with a new inrush current limiter, the Logo! ICL230.

LED lights, whose capacitive loads experience a much higher inrush current than earlier incandescent bulbs, can be switched on more safely with an inrush current limiter. The ICL230 can also briefly limit the entire inrush current for connected power supplies to 10 A as they are switched, so as to protect their relay outputs. It deactivates when normal operations resume, to minimize power losses.

This new expansion module can be used as an upstream or downstream device to protect 230-V AC devices, preventing unintentional tripping of fuses.
