THE COMPANY
Our client, based in Fort McMurray, Alta., with headquarters in Edmonton, is a multi-faceted, three-dimensional company providing electrical, instrumentation and power-line construction and maintenance to commercial and industrial clients throughout Western Canada. Our client is one of the largest electrical contractors in the active Fort McMurray oil sands sector and in recent years has expanded operations into the Edmonton area.

Our client offers a wide range of services to meet the energy/oil sands
industries of having “one” company that will provide complete PEI
(Power-line, Electrical, Instrumentation) services. This includes
design, layout, construction, calibration, commissioning, start-up,
maintenance and operations of plants. The company is also capable of
everything from an emergency shut down to a major plant turnaround. The
secret to their success as one of the oldest construction companies in
their community is their long standing relationships with their clients
and their outstanding reputation of having experienced staff with proven
oil sands brown field experience coupled with a strong record of safety
that is part of the fabric of the company.

With an employee base
of over 600, many of which are unionized positions, the company
generates annual revenues as high as $120 million. Our client’s crews
are drawn from highly skilled unionized craft personnel, many of whom
have worked together for more than 15 years. The company ensures the
requirements of its existing customer base are fulfilled by continuing
to deliver the highest quality services to their customers in the most
cost effective, safe and timely manner and through expanding their
market share in other geographies and planned acquisitions.

THE POSITION
Reporting
to the Vice President Operations, the Operations Manager will be
responsible for providing “hands on” management for the Fort McMurray
operations. This includes General Management responsibility and
oversight of Estimating, Project Management, Business Development,
Safety, and Quality.

objectives and deliverables;

The business is profitable and there is significant repeat business
based on a strong reputation and satisfied clients.

Key accountabilities include:

Direct and supervise the day-to-day activities of the Fort McMurray
operations (office and shop) with the objective of achieving new
business and executing projects and services consistent with quality and
safety objectives of the corporation;
• Provide leadership and
management direction to the key departments;
• Maintain close
relationships with key contacts of those clients that the company has
existing established relationships;
• Actively initiate and maintain
relationships with new and potential prime clients and subcontractors;

Provide support for developing new business opportunities both with new
prospective clients and existing clients. This also involves energizing
Managers within the business segment as well as those in corporate and
regional offices to identify potential client prospects;
• Review all
major proposals and oversee the planning and the allocation of
resources to execute on the construction activities;
• Supervise the
Operations staff including Project Managers and Shop Personnel;

Recruit, hire and develop staff to meet the current and future
organizational requirements;
• Oversee the day to day operations
including ongoing monitoring of project progress, ensuring budgets,
revenues and margins are achieved;
• Take action to correct
unsatisfactory conditions that may arise in any phase of the
construction operations and directs appropriate action to accomplish
company objectives;
• Lead and motivate all personnel to foster a
culture of teamwork and create a cohesive organization with the common
objective of achieving established goals;
• Assist in the preparation
of bid packages and proposals by providing field input, labour supply
information, competitive intelligence and client expectation
information;
• Provide management leadership on project execution
from project initiation to project closure;
• Interact with client
representatives and develop / maintain a positive working relationship;
and
• Provide oversight and implementation of the company’s Health,
Safety and Environmental plan and Quality Management program.

THE
INDIVIDUAL

Education:

Trade ticket in a relevant field or a CET (Certified Engineering
Technologist) or equivalent;
• Certified as a Master Electrician in
Alberta and Project Management training are definite assets.

Experience:
• Ten (10)
years experience in heavy industrial construction with at least five (5)
years in a supervisory or management role;
• The ability to read and
interpret drawings, specifications, contract documents, commercial
terms and conditions and understand the business and/or legal
implications;
• Strong problem solving, planning, organizing,
analytical and scheduling experience, ideally in an industrial
environment;
• Knowledge of WHMIS, First Aid and other applicable
safety training requirements;
• Knowledge of health and safety
legislation, regulations and standards;
• Excellent interpersonal
skills, managing multiple levels of relationships from senior level
supervision and management to senior client contacts;
• Determination
to succeed combined with a strong personal work ethic that sets a
positive tone within the organization and embodies leadership by
example;
• A team player, coach and motivator who can build a
collaborative environment internally, with clients and with other
trades;
• An individual capable and wanting to grow with the
organization; and
• An individual that is prepared to make Fort
McMurray their home and get involved in the community.

Fort McMurray, Alberta is
the largest city in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo which is
located 450 kilometers north of Edmonton.
