Just try to get lost with Garmin’s 2014 Nuvis, HUD+ and Essentials

January 7, 2014 | By Anthony Capkun

January 07, 2014 – Garmin unveiled several new automotive navigation devices: the 2798LMT is the first Nuvi with a wireless backup camera; the “affordable” 2014 Essential Series; and Head-up Display Plus (HUD+), which is a combination of Garmin’s HUD with a new, free companion smartphone app.

Nuvi 2798LMT combines a 7-in. display with a wireless backup camera; when wired to the reverse lights for power, the navigator can automatically display the live camera feed every time the vehicle is shifted into reverse, and back to navigation mode when shifted into a forward gear.

HUD+ projects directions onto a transparent film on the windshield or an attached reflector lens, explains Garmin. It receives navigation information from a Bluetooth-connected smartphone running the free Garmin HUD navigation app.

The 2014 Essential Series now provides premium functionality that was previously only available in the Advanced Series, says Garmin. New to the series are lifetime traffic avoidance on select models, School Zone Warnings, a Quick Search field for addresses and points of interest (POIs), and Up Ahead, a feature that shows a continuous stream POIs next to the map view.
