September 28, 2020 – Mersen has joined forces with F&K Delvotec to create “the optimum battery assembly solution” supporting 21700 series battery assembly systems.

As e-mobility and battery energy storage applications grow in number and power density, Mersen says designers seek to reduce the footprint of their battery assemblies without compromising efficiency or modularity of their power systems. They also desire standardized assemblies that produce a leading $/kW and kWh/kg on a modular and flexible platform.

The F&K laser bonder interface promises a high-speed, robust connection between battery cells and the laminated bus bar. The bus bar itself is “smart”, says Mersen, as it not only powers the cells but also monitors cell temperature and voltage as needed. The bus bars also eliminate wiring error and provide an extra degree of robustness against shock and vibration in e-mobility installations.

To protect the battery assembly from overcurrents, a low-watt loss/high-cycling DC-rated fuse is installed. The assembly is then secured onto a compact (7-mm thick) liquid-cooled cold plate.
