New rooftop solar panels for Evangeline and Tignish arenas

March 28, 2023 | By Anthony Capkun

March 28, 2023 – The Government of Canada is helping fund the installation of solar panels on the rooftops of two community facilities in Prince Edward Island: Evangeline Recreation Centre (Abram-Village) and Tignish Credit Union Arena.

Each project is receiving $316,800 through the Green and Inclusive Communities Building program. Meantime, the Sports Recreation Association of Tignish and the Evangeline Recreation Commission are each contributing $79,200 to their respective projects.

Evangeline expects to see energy savings of up to 28% each year. Tignish anticipates energy savings of up to 50% per year.

“The project will allow our facility to reduce operating costs, reduce our carbon footprint, and allow us to continue to serve our community members through the activities we offer.” said Glen McInnis, president, Evangeline Recreational Commission.

“This project will allow our rink to reduce operating costs while also continuing to reduce our carbon footprint—starting with our electric Zamboni and, now, the installation of solar panels,” said Gary McRae, board president, Sports Recreation Association of Tignish.

The Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) program is providing $1.5 billion over five years toward “green” and accessible retrofits, repairs or upgrades.
