Niagara Health receives innovative N95 mask cleaner from Alectra

May 28, 2020 | By Anthony Capkun

May 28, 2020 – Alectra Inc. is supporting Niagara Health’s front-line workers with the donation of a unique, made-in-Ontario N95 mask cleaner… originally designed for cleaning fresh produce.

This donation aligns with provincial guidance that indicates using validated sterilization and disinfection methods to decontaminate PPE for future use should be considered in settings where it can be safely done, Alectra explains.

The machine is located at Greater Niagara General Hospital in Niagara Falls, and will be used to reprocess masks for future use; again, in keeping with provincial guidance, expert opinion and best published evidence for reprocessing.

Using technology that was developed by Clean Works Holding Inc. (Beamsville, Ont.) to clean fresh produce and prevent food-borne illnesses, the Clean Flow process uses ultraviolet light, vaporized hydrogen peroxide and ozone to kill up to 99.99% of pathogens.

“This donation from Alectra to the Niagara Health Foundation exemplifies the value of community partnerships. I am grateful for their generosity and dedication to supporting the fight against COVID- 19,” said Walter Sendzik, Mayor, St. Catharines.
