Optelian appoints Dr Sheldon Walklin to CTO

Optelian, a designer and manufacturer of optical transport systems, has promoted Dr. Sheldon Walklin to the position of chief technology officer. (He previously served as the company’s director of systems architecture.) Walkin joined Optelian in 2006. In his new role, he will oversee key aspects of Optelian’s R&D activities and provide long-term vision and strategy at the executive level.

Walklin has over 15 years of experience in optical communications; 10
years as a senior designer in product development and five years in an
industry-focused research environment. He worked at a variety of
companies prior to joining Optelian, including Nortel, Research In
Motion, Innovance Networks and Metconnex.

He received a B.Sc. with Distinction in Electrical Engineering in 1993
and a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1997 from the
University of Alberta. His Ph.D. research was conducted at
Telecommunications Research Laboratories in Edmonton, Alta., where he
pioneered theoretical and experimental work on multilevel signalling in
high-speed lightwave systems. Walklin is also a member of IEEE
Communications Society, Photonics Society and CREATE Program Committee
for Next Generation Optical Networks.
