June 8, 2008 | By Alyssa Dalton

Optical Cable Corp.—a manufacturer of fiber optic cables sold primarily into the enterprise market—has acquired Superior Modular Products Inc. (doing business as SMP Data Communications), a supplier of FO and copper connectivity products for the datacom industry. Acquired from Preformed Line Products Co., SMP is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Optical.

“Our
long-term strategy for Optical Cable includes expanding our product
offerings to provide our customers with more complete cabling and
connectivity solutions,” said Neil Wilkin, Optical’s president and CEO.

SMP will
broaden Optical Cable’s product offering to include a FO and copper
connectivity. It manufactures more than 2000 products, including Cat 5e
systems, high-density FO enclosures, and Cat 6a connectivity solutions
offering 10 Gig throughput.

Bill
Reynolds, previously the general manager of SMP, will continue in his
leadership role, serving as its president. Reynolds will also serve as
a senior vice-president of Optical with responsibilities for sales in
the United States for both Optical and SMP products. Wilkin will serve
as chair and CEO of SMP in addition to his existing position as chair,
president and CEO of Optical.
