January 24, 2013 - Berk-Tek (a Nexans Company)—a copper and fiber optic cable technology and solutions player—unveiled its new 1500-ft UTP copper cable package option—smartPAK—at the BICSI Winter Conference this week. This package option will allow more runs out of one box of cable, says Berk-Tek, while substantially cutting the scrap. A standard 1000-ft box of UTP cable allows three 300-ft pulls (the maximum length allowed by the TIA-568-C standards), leaving 100 ft (10%) as leftover scrap, says the company, noting the smartPAK package allows multiple lengths of either 300 ft or 150 ft with no scrap. Because Berk-Tek’s smartPAK box contains 50% more cable, the box construction is made with additional reinforced, multi-layer corrugated cardboard for added strength. This reduces carton sagging and improves stacking, says the company. The smartPAK packaging option will begin shipping to distributors in February, and will include all of  Berk-Tek’s four core UTP products, in both plenum and riser versions: LANmark-1000, LANmark-6, LANmark-350, and Hyper Plus 5e.

November 19, 2012 - Nokia Siemens Networks is working with Ballard Power Systems Inc. to develop mobile networks that can continue to operate during power blackouts. Backup power solutions based on fuel cell technology deliver a number of advantages over conventional batteries and diesel generators, boast Ballard and Nokia, including higher reliability across a range of operating conditions, lower maintenance costs, longer operating life as well as reduced size, weight, installation footprint, noise signature and environmental impact. The fuel cell weight and size are significantly less in comparison to existing lead acid batteries that are typically used in many base stations to provide backup power for extended outages, they add. The base station and fuel cell combination developed by Nokia Siemens Networks with Ballard can provide 4.5 kW of power for about 40 hours on a single tank of fuel.
November 19, 2012 - Fluke Networks has announced the new AirMagnet Enterprise SmartEdge Sensor Series 4, a dedicated sensor for Wi-Fi network monitoring which claims to eliminate the need for Ethernet cabling, and reduces the cost by up to two thirds in situations where cable installation is prohibitive from a time, cost or logistics perspective. With three internal radios and Wireless Connect feature, the SmartEdge Sensor Series 4 for AirMagnet Enterprise extends Wi-Fi security and performance monitoring, providing immediate coverage in the face of explosive wireless LAN (WLAN) growth and the Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) phenomena, says Fluke. The sensor also features increased memory capacity and support for 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet. FLUKE NETWORKS
November 19, 2012 - Eaton has introduced the XC controllers with Controller Development Software (CoDeSys), boasting fast, cost-efficient control for heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC); renewables; and global food packaging applications. According to Eaton, the modular XC programmable logic controllers (PLCs) help reduce costs and are scalable to meet individual and evolving automation system requirements for small and medium-sized systems. Providing customizable control, XC controllers are expandable with high-speed input/output (I/O) modules. Up to 15 XIOC local expansion modules can be connected directly to each controller and are available in a variety of high-density channels, analog, temperature, counter, and communication modules. Additionally, XC controllers have eight digital inputs and six digital outputs as standard.EATON
November 5, 2012 - Platinum Tools has launched its Hi-Performance Cat5e and Cat6 standard modular plugs, which claim to isolate each conductor at the point of termination, thanks to its Hi-Lo stagger design. According to the company, this allows air to surround each conductor and eliminate NEXT, FEXT and AXT, resulting in performance beyond certification requirements. The round-solid three-prong plug is UL rated (RoHS), FCC compliant, utilizes gold-plated contacts (50u), and is also available in round-stranded.PLATINUM TOOLS
