RECALL: Dewalt Large Angle Grinder due to laceration hazard – RCL13-30

July 5, 2013 – The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) is notifying the public that Dewalt has announced a voluntary recall of the following products due to laceration hazards:

D28474C – 7-in. Large angle grinder 8000RPM
D28474W – 7-in. Large angle grinder 8000RPM
D28494S – 7-in. Large angle grinder 8000RPM
D28493N – 7-in. Large angle grinder 8000RPM
D28497 – 7-in. Large angle grinder 8000RPM
D28499X – 7-in. Large angle grinder 8000RPM
651858-00 – Service part replacement side handle

Dewalt has identified a potential safety hazard with the side handles of certain large angle grinders. Under certain circumstances, the side handle could break causing the user to lose full control of the unit. At this time, no incidents or injuries have been reported.

Any large angle grinders from the list below that have a manufacturing date prior to 2011-32 are affected by this recall notification.

Grinders with a green dot sticker near the UPC and on the outside of the master carton as photographed below are not affected by this recall. These grinders have handles with an improved design. There is a marking on the outer flange of the handle with an embossed “BL” as photographed below.

The affected tools were distributed prior to August 14, 2011.

Consumers should stop using the affected products and contact Dewalt for a free handle replacement by calling 1-800-916-7004 Monday-Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Eastern time or order replacement handles through an authorized Dewalt Service centre.
