November 10, 2016 – In a joint recall with the U.S. CPSC, Kidde is recalling hard-wired NightHawk talking combo smoke/CO alarms (KN-COSM-IBCA and KN-COSM-ICA) manufactured between June 1, 2004, and March 2011.

The alarms are white, round and measure about 5 in. to 6 in. in diameter. “Kidde” is engraved on the front, while “Kidde”, the model number and manufacture dates are printed on a label on the back.

Model KN-COSM-IBCA has a compartment on the back for the installation of a replaceable 9V backup battery, while model KN-COSM-ICA does not have a battery backup.

These alarms can fail to continue to chirp when they reach their 7-year end-of-life if the batteries are replaced, or when power is removed then restored to the model without a battery backup. This could lead consumers to believe the alarm is still working, which poses a risk to them not being alerted to a fire or carbon monoxide incident in their homes.

Neither Health Canada nor Kidde have received any reports of consumer incidents or injuries related to the use of this product. In the United States, Kidde has received eight reports of incidents with no reported injuries.

About 1.5 million units were sold in Canada at various wholesalers and retailers, while 3.6 million units were sold in the States.

The alarms were manufactured in China by Fyrnetics Ltd.

Consumers should stop using the recalled alarms and contact Kidde for a free replacement based on date of manufacture, or a discount on a new alarm. Call Kidde Canada at 855-239-0490 OR CLICK HERE to determine whether your alarm is affected.
