RECALL: Ouellet, Stelpro and Dimplex electric heaters

April 11, 2019 – Health Canada has announced recalls for a variety of electrical heaters due to fire hazards, including products manufactured by Ouellet (examples pictured), Electrimart, Global Commander, Stelpro Design, Uniwatt, Chromalox, Centurion, Electromode, Westcan and Dimplex.

The products’ heating elements may be defective and fail, posing electrical arc and fire hazards. Customers should disconnect and stop using the appliances immediately.

Approximately 291,375 Ouellet (model numbers OCH4800, OCH4800WB, OCH4800RF and OAE5000T), Electrimart (ECH48 and CH48) and Global Commander (CHG4800 and CCG4800) 4,800-W and 5,000-W portable and permanent appliances were sold in Canada between 1989 and 2016. By Apr. 1, 2019, 26 fires were reported (but no injuries). Ouellet Canada in L’Islet, Que., can be contacted at 800-463-7043 for a rebate on a replacement appliance.

Meanwhile, approximately 199,660 Stelpro (model numbers PCH48T and PCH4800T) and Uniwatt (UCH48T, UCH4800T and UCH48) 4,800-W construction heaters were sold in Canada between 2000 and 2009. As of Apr. 2, 2019, there were eight reports of fire, with no injuries. Stelpro in St-Bruno-de-Montarville, Que., may be contacted at 844-783-5776 for a rebate on a replacement appliance.

Finally, approximately 420,000 Chromalox, Centurion, Electromode, Westcan and Dimplex 240-V, 4,800-W electric construction heaters with 30-A plugs (model numbers: GCH4800, GCH4800B, GCH 4831, CCONS4800, ECH-48, ECH4800B, BCH4800, DCH-4831, DCH4831A and DCH4831R) were sold in Canada between 1992 and 2006. As of Apr. 3, 2019, there were 36 reports of their heating elements failing and causing damage, but again no injuries. Their distributor, Glen Dimplex Americas in Cambridge, Ont., can be contacted through its website and recommends disposing of them according to local municipal waste requirements.
