August 30, 2016 – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports United Copper is recalling certain metal-clad (MC) aluminum armoured cables due to fire and shock hazards.

Specifically, a damaged conductor coating can cause the cable to short circuit, posing fire and shock hazards.

The recall involves 250-ft and 1000-ft metal-clad aluminum armoured cabling with date codes between August 2015 and November 2015. The cable is typically installed behind walls, connecting the circuit breaker panel to a 120V wall outlet or lighting switch.

The date code is printed in a MMMYY format (e.g. Aug15) on the back side of the hang tag attached to the cabling at the time of purchase.

No incidents/injuries have been reported.

The recall involves about 57,000 units sold through electrical distributors across the States from August 2015 through November 2015 for about between $80 and $90 for the 250-ft reel, and between $310 and $370 for the 1000-ft reel.

It is unknown how many, if any, of the recalled units made it into Canada.

The product was manufactured in the United States.

Consumers should immediately contact United Copper to schedule a free inspection to determine whether their cable is included in the recall. Consumers cannot safely identify or replace the recalled cable that is likely installed within the walls of the building. United Copper says it is directly contacting distributors who purchased the recalled cable.
