October 3, 2016 – City of Markham, Ont. and PowerStream officials flipped the switch today on the city’s newest solar installation at the Pan Am Centre. The 450kW AC rooftop installation is expected to produce enough electricity to power 65 typical Markham households, according to PowerStream.

“It is wonderful to see a Pan Am venue transformed into an energy-sustainability legacy for the community while helping the province deliver a modern and reliable electricity system”, said Glenn Thibeault, Minister of Energy.

This marks the ninth rooftop array of solar panels installed at Markham municipal facilities and raises the city’s renewable solar portfolio to 1.8MW, the utility adds, which is amongst the largest solar fleets hosted by a municipality in Ontario. Revenue from the solar projects is typically $300,000 a year.

This is the first Feed-in-Tariff 3 (FIT 3) solar project completed by PowerStream and the 87th installation in the company’s solar generation portfolio.

The project, measuring two and half football fields in size and containing 1793 solar panels, was also completed with collaboration from RESCo Energy Inc.
