RuggedCom Inc. has partnered with Itron Inc. to expand the scope of both companies’ smart grid offerings.

RuggedCom’s RuggedMAX—an IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX 802.16e) certified
solution—will be integrating with Itron’s OpenWay smart metering
solution to add to the WiMAX backhaul communications option for
utilities. RuggedMAX says it supplies a comprehensive solution of base
stations and subscriber units for fixed and vehicular deployments; providing advanced metering backhaul as well as distribution
automation and field force communications using a single infrastructure. Itron’s smart grid technologies focus on built-in, high-speed two-way
communications, providing reliability at a lower cost
for customers, says Itron.
