October 15, 2015 – Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc. has been honoured with a President’s Award by the Infrastructure Health & Safety Association (IHSA) for reaching the safety milestone of 750,000 hours without a lost-time injury.

“I am very proud of all our employees for maintaining their focus on safety every day, no matter whether they are working in our offices, on construction sites or on the streets of Guelph or Rockwood—in bad weather or good, each of which poses its own set of safety hazards,” says Kazi Marouf, chief operating officer with Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc.

Behind the scenes, Guelph Hydro says it has a comprehensive safety management system in place that consists of four components:

• Regular workplace safety inspections and site visits.
• A Loss Prevention Program that incorporates root cause analysis of any incidents or near misses.
• Material and work standards for job planning and the purchase of tools and equipment.
• Safety training for all employees.

Contractors also receive safety training to ensure they meet the same high standards of safety, the company says.

Guelph Hydro also provides electrical safety training for elementary school students, touching on the hazards posed by outlets, appliances, substations, transformers, hydro poles and overhead electrical wire.

Guelph Hydro Electric Systems Inc. delivers electricity to approximately 53,000 residential, commercial and industrial customers in Guelph and Rockwood. The company is owned by Guelph Municipal Holdings Inc.
