Take time to invest in yourself • from the editor

December 7, 2020 | By Anthony Capkun

December 7, 2020 – As I write this, Manitoba entered a province-wide shutdown to stem the tide of Covid. The Yukon recorded its first Covid-related death, while Nunavut moved into territory-wide restrictions.

I’ve watched Saskatchewan, seemingly untouched at the start of the pandemic, show steady increases in the number of cases. Ontario and Quebec have fallen off the wagon, un-flattenening their respective curves and moving into targeted restrictions.

We’ve had some distribution challenges (page 22), trouble with sourcing some fundamental building materials (page 26), an increase in construction prices and an 8.5% drop in building construction investment.

But take heart! As we wait for the vaccine(s), let’s not overlook the fact that we’ve lived in pandemic for about 9 months, so we have a very good handle on what to do and how to go about our business safely, while keeping those around us safe, too. That’s an amazing accomplishment, and worth celebrating!

The Andex Chart tracks how a financial investment would have performed over time. (Just google “Andex chart”.) While there are always dips, drops and crashes in the market, all things end up increasing in value over time.

There’s no question that we’re in a rough patch right now, and future Andex Charts will undoubtedly show a drop in 2020. But those same charts will continue to show steady increases in value over time, just as they have for the past 80 years.

People still need electricity to run their lives and livelihoods. If government gets its way (and it usually does), the march toward 100% electrification will continue unabated, if not accelerated.

Your expertise is very much needed, and will be in even greater demand in the coming years. Take time to invest in yourself and your business so that, like the investments in the Andex Chart, you increase in value over time.

To you and yours, we wish you all the best for the holidays and a Happy New Year.
