January 25, 2016 – A “significant” equipment donation made to Lambton College on behalf of ABB will enhance training for students enrolled in the school’s technology programs, the college said.

The donation, valued at nearly $511,000, consists of eight complete sets of computer systems, Lambton said, capable of providing advanced process controls in various industrial process manufacturing settings. Known in the industry as a Distributed Control System (DCS), these systems are implemented in various locations throughout manufacturing plants via a communication network that carries process information back to operations staff.

Prior to ABB’s donation, Lambton College—located in Sarnia, Ont.—only had three distributed controls systems, which students would rotate around.

“We are thrilled to celebrate this new partnership with ABB. Their generous equipment donation will further enhance our educational programming, and the hands-on training students receive in our various flagship technology programs,” said Judith Morris, president and CEO of Lambton College. “This kind of support means our students have access to state-of-practice equipment and that our graduates will continue to meet and exceed the expectations of industry employers.”

For chemical production & power engineering technology (CPET) and power engineering technology (PETC) students, this means further exposure to controlling and troubleshooting real-life process control scenarios on control systems they are likely to use in the field, Lambton said. Likewise, instrumentation & control engineering technology (ICET) students will gain exposure to designing, configuring, troubleshooting, controlling, and maintaining industry processes that relay information to process operations personnel.

“We are very pleased to invest in the future of our industry by providing the practitioners of tomorrow with valuable hands-on experience with these control systems,” said Nathalie Pilon, president and CEO of ABB in Canada.

The gift-in-kind donation is part of The Lambton College Foundation’s Envision Tomorrow Capital Campaign, which launched in June 2015. To date, the college stated the campaign has reached $33.3 million of its $45 million goal.
