January 9, 2017 | By Renée Francoeur

January 9, 2017 – Applications are now available to Nova Scotia employers for the province’s 2017 Energy Training Program, which “supports opportunities for students and recent graduates to gain specialized training and work experience”.

Small and medium-sized companies in the energy sector can apply for wage support to hire post-secondary students and recent graduates, receiving 50% of a student’s salary, up to $7.50 per hour, during a student’s employment with the company. Work terms run from 12 to 17 weeks between May and August. The application deadline is Feb. 24, 2017.

“Across government we’re helping hundreds of young people find opportunities that will lead to rewarding careers here in Nova Scotia,” said Energy minister Michel Samson. “There is tremendous potential in our energy sector and this program helps businesses create momentum by giving some of our brightest young minds the chance to get a foot in the door.”

Since 2002 the Energy Training Program says it has funded about 420 student placements at more than 100 companies.

National labour statistics indicate that Nova Scotia made more progress on reducing youth unemployment than any other province in Canada in 2015, the province added.

This program is part of government’s Make it Here initiative to connect Nova Scotians with government programs for education and training, and entering the workforce.
