Creating “a safer province” with WSIB’s Health & Safety Excellence program

July 13, 2021 | By Anthony Capkun

July 13, 2021 – Ontario’s Workplace Safety & Insurance Board released the largest quarterly rebate payout to businesses—to the tune of some $6.2 million—since launching its Health & Safety Excellence program.

But what is WSIB’s Health & Safety Excellence program? Is it some kind of audit, or something else altogether?

“Prior to [this program], there were a number of health & safety programs run by the WSIB available for different types of businesses,” explains Rod Cook, WSIB’s vice-president, Workplace Health & Safety Services. “The evolution of the Health & Safety Excellence Program came from the integration of these former programs.”

Rod dispels the suggestion that this voluntary program could be some kind of an audit.

“I see it as more of a survey—a conversation starter,” he says. “[We] created it to help businesses if they want to use it; it can help them identify potential gaps in their existing health & safety programs, and the Health & Safety Excellence Program can then help them close those gaps.”

Besides rebates and a possible reduction in premiums, Rod says “The underlying goal of our program is to create a safer province… a safer Ontario”.
