August 15, 2023 – Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator welcomed Fiona Blondin to its board of directors.

“With over 25 years of combined experience in power, mining, public sector, and private consulting for First Nation, Inuit and Métis communities, Fiona brings a wealth of experience and understanding, knowing that the best path forward in projects involving Indigenous communities is truly understanding and supporting the unique goals and vision for respective Indigenous nations,” reads Blondin’s biography on IESO’s website.

IESO is the coordinator and integrator of Ontario’s electricity system. Its operators monitor the energy needs of the province in real time, balancing supply and demand and directing the flow of electricity across Ontario’s transmission lines.

Several weeks ago, Blondin also joined the board of directors at VIA HFR. Touted as one of the largest infrastructure projects in Canadian history, VIA HFR “will transform intercity passenger rail service in Canada through the creation of a faster, more frequent, accessible and sustainable rail service between Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montreal, Trois-Rivières and Quebec City”.

“I am humbled and honoured by the opportunity to advance the largest sustainable transportation project in a generation,” said Blondin. “With the participation of the Indigenous peoples of Canada, high-frequency rail will help to strengthen nation-to-nation relationships, advance partnerships and economic reconciliation, and build a brighter future for all who call this land home.”

When completed, VIA HFR will run on mainly new, electrified and dedicated tracks that extend over 1000 kilometres. Speeds could eventually reach 200 kph.

A member of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation in Northwest Territories, Blondin serves as vice-president, Indigenous Strategy, at Cormorant Utility Services.
