I-Gard reconnects with roots: dynamic braking resistors
May 15, 2017 - IPC Resistors rebranded into I-Gard about 12 years ago, the company says, and exited various power resistor markets with a new strategic focus on new core markets of ground fault and arc flash protection.
“It is now time that we rediscover our roots as a power resistor company and reinvest some of our engineering resources and innovation into products such as dynamic braking and resistive load banks, providing industrial customers with the quality and service they expect and deserve,” says Andrew Cochran, president.
Dynamic braking resistors are used with AC variable speed drives to prevent an over voltage trip while slowing a high inertia load. The resistor is connected across the DC bus and can see voltages as high as 1000V DC. The resistance value in Ohms determines the amount of braking torque produced and this determines the rate at which the motor can be stopped. The resistor wattage is sized to prevent overheating during normal braking cycles.
